Eating for the Summer Season (TCM Dietary)

Updated: Jul 9

Summer Diet in Traditional Chinese Medicine

With summer only a few days away for those for us in northern hemisphere, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes the importance of aligning our diet with the seasons to maintain optimal health and well-being. In TCM philosophy, summer is associated with the fire element and the heart and small intestine organs. During this season, it is believed that the body is more susceptible to heat accumulation, which can lead to imbalances if not properly addressed.

Recommended Foods for Summer in TCM:

  • Fruits: Fruits with high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, and kiwi have a cooling effect on the body, which can help counteract summer heat. Juicy fruits consumption during summer season can be very refreshing to the body. Besides, it is high in vitamin C content which can help boosting our immune system against the pathogens.

  • Vegetables: On top of its cooling property, most green leaf vegetables such as kale and spinach are high in fiber and iron content. They are beneficial and can help with digestion. Other bitter taste vegetables, for example bitter melon, can help clearing heat from the body and support detoxification processes during the summer months.

  • Herbs: TCM often incorporates herbal supplements like mint, chrysanthemum, and dandelion into summer diets to promote cooling, detox the liver and aid digestion. These herbs are believed to have a soothing effect on the body and can help alleviate heat-related discomfort especially on liver organ.

  • Grains: Barley, millet, and amaranth are suggested in TCM to help balance the body's internal temperature and support spleen and stomach function during the summer season.

  • Proteins: When it comes to proteins, consume lighter food options such as seafood including fish and shellfish. Of course, legumes, beans and tofu are not excluded for vegan and vegetarian options. These protein sources are considered easier to digest and less likely to contribute to internal heat buildup compared to heavier meats.

In order to prevent exacerbating internal heat that may disrupt the body's equilibrium, it is best to avoid heavy, oily and spicy foods during the summer season. Avoid over indulging gilled fatty food such as deep fried food, barbecued red meat and ice creams. By choosing lighter, cooling foods, individuals can better support their body's natural ability to stay balanced and healthy during the warmer months.

Staying well-hydrated is crucial in TCM during the summer, and this can be achieved by drinking ample water, home-made fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, and herbal teas. By listening to the body's cues for light, fresh foods and maintaining a balanced diet, individuals can optimize their health and well-being in accordance with TCM principles.
