Frequent Urination due to Overactive Bladder in Elderly

Updated: Mar 30

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common issue that many people face. It comes with symptoms of needing to urinate frequently, sometimes urgently, or dealing with incontinence, and waking up at night to go. As people get older, the chances of experiencing OAB increase in both men and women. This condition can affect your physical health and mental well-being, making daily life a lot tougher.

When it comes to treating OAB, antimuscarinic therapy is the go-to option. There are several medications available for adults, including oxybutynin, tolterodine, trospium chloride, darifenacin, and solifenacin. The costs for treating OAB can vary quite a bit. For example, using solifenacin might cost around $3,373, while immediate-release oxybutynin can go up to $3,769. On average, the ongoing treatment costs are lowest with solifenacin, totaling about $6,863 per patient.

Recently, I had a patient come in with urinary incontinence issues. She was frustrated because her insurance wouldn’t cover her medication. One side effect she experienced was not feeling the urge to go, even when her bladder was full. Plus, she was worried about being dependent on this medication forever. With all these concerns, she asked if I had any solutions.I assured her that we could help regulate her overactive bladder. After just two treatments, she was able to cut back on her medication from daily use to every other day. By the time she completed five acupuncture sessions, she was completely medication-free! The cost of those five acupuncture treatments was much lower than the ongoing medication expenses, and she didn't have to deal with any side effects. Plus, her body started functioning properly again without relying on medication.

If you are aware of any older men or women facing similar problems, you can assist them in alleviating the embarrassment of urinary leakage, decreasing their dependence on diapers or medication, and regain some financial independence by considering acupuncture treatment to help restore their bodies to normal function.
